Between 11-13th April 2022, the 16th annual conference of the Teacher Education Policy in Europe (TEPE) network took place at the University of Graz. More than 100 teacher education researchers travelled to Graz from across Europe to present their work related to this year’s conference topic: “Enhancing the value of teacher education research: Implications for policy and practice”. It was the first conference "in Präsenz" for many and such a great opportunity for personal direct encounter.
The conference was organised by the Institute of Education Research and Teacher Education and the Center for Teacher Education at the University of Graz and it was supported by the City of Graz and the teacher education section of the Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB).
Through keynote speeches, parallel paper and symposium sessions, a poster session and the TEPE panel discussion, the following themes were explored:
Theme 1: The value of research in teacher education: Research-based teacher education and the role of teachers and teacher educators as researchers.
Theme 2: The value of research on teacher education: Innovative approaches in conducting teacher education research at pre-service and in-service levels.
Theme 3: Teacher education research and policy: The potential of research to inform and evaluate the impact of policy.
Theme 4: Teacher education research and practice: Designing research and curricula that are meaningful for the practice.
The conference argued about the importance of teacher education research for both policy and practice, raising the need for researchers, policy-makers and education professionals to enhance the value of teacher education research at their own national, institutional and professional contexts. Following the end of the conference, an edited volume in the TEPE Book Series is planned to distil the conference’s main messages and significant contributions.
Next year’s TEPE conference will take place at the University of Karlstad, Sweden between 08-10 May 2023.
